Alfred Hassler (1910-1991) was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania and raised in New York, N.Y. He attended Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute and took night classes in journalism at Columbia University. He was employed by The Leader-Observer in Queens before joining the staff of American Baptist Publications in Philadelphia. In 1942, Hassler became editor of Fellowship, a journal published by the Fellowship of Reconciliation. He was imprisoned as a conscientious objector during World War II and later wrote of his experiences in DIARY OF A SELF-MADE CONVICT. Additionally, he wrote numerous anti-war articles and books. Hassler retired from FoR. in 1974 and with his wife Dorothy founded Almeira, a retirement community in southern Spain. He returned to the United States in the 1980s and settled in New York state. In addition to his work with FoR., Hassler founded the Dai Dong project which linked war, environmental issues and poverty, and was the president of the International Confederation for Disarmament and Peace. Alfred Hassler died of cancer on June 5, 1991 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern, N.Y. at the age of 81.
