The Peoples
Congress issued the following Global Declaration
n° 17 at the
close of its Fifth Plenary Session held in Brighton on
September 14-15th :
FREEDOM OF
INFORMATION
As DELEGATES to the PEOPLE'S CONGRESS, elected
directly and democratically by a trans national
electorate, spread over 110 countries
WE APPRECIATE:
- The communication technologies on going progress
that scientific and technological research are making
available the human right to information and
communication
HOWEVER, WE WANT TO DRAW ATTENTION TO:
- On one hand, the growing ascendancy of the
political and financial powers over the information
agencies and the worldwide diffusion systems of the
written and spoken press
- And on the other hand, the weakness of the
international organisations to develop an information
world order, absolutely necessary and possible
CONVINCED:
- That the defence of peace and justice is about the
protection of individuals against harmful exploitation
and abuses through modern means of information
WE FINALLY ARE SURE:
Of the beneficial value of this protection in order to
create a political enlightened world opinion
WE DEPLORE:
- The current deficiency of the national and
international radio and television programs in the
area of information about world problems
- The absence at the international level of the
right to response and corrections in order to
effectively allow people in the public and private
sector to defend themselves
CONSEQUENTLY WE REQUEST:
